WHAT IS A VCXO? A VCXO or voltage controlled crystal oscillator is a crystal oscillator with a control element added that allows the oscillator Frequency to be controlled by an external voltage. The control element is typically a varactor diode. On our standard family of 14 pin dip package VCXO the control voltage is applied to pin 1. BENEFITS OF A VCXO VERSUS A VCO A VCXO is very similar to a VCO with some notable differences: VCXOs do not typically have the tuning range of a VCO. VCXOs do offer far superior performance in several areas over VCOs - Stability versus temperature, Aging and Phase noise.
